Croix had his 15 mo. check up last week. One of the things the Dr. and I discussed was Croix's speech, or lack there of. He doesn't have any words that he uses. He doesn't really even use Mama and Dada appropriately. He jabbers all the time. He can point to something in a book, when we ask where's the baby, he will point to the baby. He uses sign language. He listens to and understands what I'm saying. I've thought maybe the reason he is not talking could be his hearing, so I whispered his name, he turned and looked at me. I kind of think he's just not interested in talking yet. The Dr. would like us to have his hearing tested and have a speech evlauation done. She said it's not a major concern at this point, but if there is something wrong the earlier we can catch it the better. If there are problems that are not caught by the age of 2 it can affect their speach for the rest of their life. So we'll get some tests done.
This morning on the way to church Brent says to me
"I know what will get him talking for sure."
"What is that?" I asked.
"All we have to do is start cussing in front of him"
I laughed. Then to prove Brent wrong I said.
Croix immediately said "Oh shit"
That's right. My child's first word was shit. We both laughed so hard we couldn't breathe. I had tears running down my cheeks! It was like something out of the movies! Poor Croix! What an awful first word. Try as we may, he hasn't said another word, and I'm not about to say that word again in front of him again!
